Late Night Bubbles: Exploring Modal Theory in Game Soundtrack Design

“Late Night Bubbles” is a bit of an outlier for me. Usually, when I’m composing music for games, the core idea bursts out in a single session. This track, however, evolved over five different sittings, becoming a complex puzzle that I had to solve piece by piece.

After the first few sessions, I realized I’d written myself into a corner—I couldn’t quite pin down the harmonic structure. Was it E Dorian? B Minor? Maybe F# Phrygian? I was actually lost in the theory of my own composition, which is a rare and slightly trippy experience.

The breakthrough happened late one night in the studio. I stopped overthinking the scales and modes and just played by feel. It’s a great example of how atmospheric sound design often comes from intuition rather than math. If you think you can crack the code on the harmonic analysis, please let me know!
