Casual Game App Music: Crafting a Catchy Theme with Charleston Vibes

I wrote this intro music for a new casual game app currently under development. While I can’t reveal too much about the app yet, the goal was clear: it needs to be addictive, fun, and centered around a catchy mobile game theme that sticks in the player’s head.

The foundation is an upbeat adaptation of the classic “Charleston” drum pattern paired with a driving bass line. But the actual melody? That was the hard part. People often underestimate how difficult it is to write a minimalistic, effective theme. I once had someone at a conference compare it to the “Digger” theme like it was nothing—I asked him if he wanted me to write “Dark Side of the Moon” while I was at it!

The breakthrough actually happened while I was shopping in IKEA. Looking at their simple, colorful, and accessible design, the melody just clicked. I grabbed an IKEA pencil and a shopping list, drew a staff, and wrote the notes right there. It’s a perfect example of how casual game sound design needs to be well-rounded and accessible. The project manager loved the final result!
