“The Niner” is a very interesting track. I wanted to make some kind of a hypnotic music for a game, and combine sounds of muted trumpet with a wah effect on top. This creates a hazy, smokey effect which I really like, as I think it adds a lot of depth and mystery to the music.

 

The sound design for this track was not an easy task. The different instruments seemed to “run over” one another, and it took a long mixing session to get this exactly right and make all the sounds work together in harmony, and turn into one coherent piece of music.

 

I think that all in all, my favorite musical line in this track is the bass. The phrasing is in a different rhythm than the rest of the instruments, and although most people would not be able to put their finger on it, it makes something feel “askew”, underneath the surface. I think this track shows how sound design for games can be fun and musical, and turn into a real musical piece.
