The Niner
The Niner: Hypnotic Atmosphere and Jazz-Infused Sound Design
“The Niner” was an experiment in creating hypnotic, atmospheric game music. I wanted to see if I could combine a muted trumpet with a wah-wah effect to create a hazy, smoky texture. It adds a layer of mystery and depth that makes the track feel like it’s living in its own world.
The audio mixing for this one was a massive puzzle. With so many textured instruments, they kept trying to “run over” one another. It took a long, focused session to carve out the right frequencies and make sure everything worked together as one coherent game soundtrack.
My favorite part is the bass line—the phrasing is set to a different rhythm than the rest of the instruments. It creates an “askew” feeling underneath the surface that most people can’t quite name, but they definitely feel it. It’s a great example of how sound design for games can be deeply musical and experimental at the same time.
Enjoy the trip!
