Game as an Art Form (Conference Talk)

Game as an Art Form: Philosophies on Immersion and Aesthetics

In 2016, I was invited to speak at Castle Game Jam in Sweden. While much of my work focuses on the technical side of adaptive music for games, this talk was an opportunity to step back and examine the “Why” behind our creations. I share my personal journey and my core philosophy: that games are the ultimate modern art form, capable of synthesizing sound, visual art, and human agency into a single, unified experience.

I discuss how art pertains to games not just as a coat of paint, but as a foundational element that dictates player immersion. When we treat a game as an art form, every note of an adaptive music system must serve the narrative arc and the emotional truth of the world we are building.

Key Themes from the Talk

  • The Synthesis of Media: How games combine music, literature, and visual arts into a “Total Work of Art.”
  • Emotional Agency: The unique power of games to make the audience a co-creator of the aesthetic experience.
  • Adaptive Music as Narrative: Moving beyond background tracks to create audio that reflects the player’s internal journey.
  • The Creator’s Intent: Maintaining artistic integrity within the constraints of commercial game development.

You can watch the full session from the Castle Game Jam stage below. It serves as a background for my approach to every project I take on—aiming for artistic cohesion above all else.
